In the 1890s black teams were formed to represent Palm Beach's two exclusive winter resort hotels, the Royal Poinciana and the Breakers.

The Palm Beach association with African American baseball extended well into the 1920s, when Rube Foster's Chicago American Giants played for the Royal Poinciana against a collection of players from the east representing the Breakers
