Macon, GA. - On Saturday evening (2/08/2003), Josh Gibson along with five other athletes were inducted to The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.

The catcher known as "the black Babe Ruth" died in 1947 at age 35, just three months before Jackie Robinson broke baseball's color barrier. Satchel Paige called Gibson, who was born in Buena Vista, "the greatest hitter who ever lived." He hit "almost 800" homers in his 17-year career, according to his Baseball Hall of Fame plaque, and one book put his career batting average at .384, the best in the Negro leagues.
